Tretiva is utilized to treat severe nodular acne that hasn't responded to other treatments. Nodular acne consists of inflamed lumps formed from excess sebum (facial oil) production. Tretiva, a derivative of vitamin A, reduces sebum production, helping to prevent permanent facial scarring. This medication is classified as a retinoid.

The prescribed dosage of Tretiva will differ for each patient. Always adhere to your doctor’s guidelines and the instructions on the medication label. If your doctor has instructed you to take Tretiva on a regular schedule and you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember. However, if it’s nearly time for your next dose, skip the missed one and return to your regular dosing schedule. Do not take double doses unless specifically directed.

Taking any medication in excess can lead to serious consequences. If you think you have overdosed on Tretiva, contact your doctor or poison control center immediately. Symptoms of an overdose may include loss of balance, vomiting, abdominal pain, facial flushing, and headaches.

Like other medications, Tretiva may cause some side effects. When they occur, they are typically minor and temporary, but some could be severe and necessitate informing a doctor or visiting the nearest hospital right away. It’s important to recognize that side effects of Tretiva cannot be predicted. Should any side effects arise or change in intensity, notify your doctor as soon as possible.

Tretiva may lead to birth defects, issues with bones and muscles, abdominal complications, problems with hearing and vision, painful swallowing, dark urine, rectal bleeding, severe heartburn, dizziness, and intense headaches. This list does not encompass all potential side effects. Always consult your doctor and follow their instructions closely while taking Tretiva.
